Gareth Crosskey, Facebook hacker and former fast food employee from the UK, hacked into the Facebook account of the popular teen star Selena Gomez. He then went on to threaten to leak emails between Gomez and her boyfriend Justin Bieber. On July 4th, 2012 Crosskey had his jail sentence reduced on appeal.
Crosskey sparked a £50,000 FBI and Police investigation after posing as the actress’s step-father in order to convince a Facebook employee to change the password on her social networking account.
The 21-year-old plead guilty to two offences under the “Computer Misuse Act” and was sentenced to 12 months of jail time in May. However, on Wednesday, July 4 he was back in court, where his lawyers that the judges release him. They argued that his sentence should have been suspended in the first place.
According to one of the judges, Justice Owen, “the offences were so serious that he deserved to be behind bars”, but he then reduced Crosskey’s sentence down to 8 months, stating the original sentence was “excessive”.
